Buying a used car should be an exciting milestone, but my recent experience purchasing a Toyota Corolla Hatchback from Carlos at Skyline Auto USA turned into a stressful ordeal involving undisclosed structural damage and deceptive sales practices.
Here is the breakdown of what happened and why you need to be extremely cautious when dealing with this seller.
Red Flags From the Start

The Initial Contact: I messaged Carlos on Facebook Messenger about a Corolla Hatchback he had listed. When I asked for a CarFax, he instead provided screenshots from GoodCar showing no accidents and claimed the car had a “clean title, no damages.”

The Meeting: I rented a car to drive to the dealership in Katy, TX. Upon inspecting the vehicle, I noticed the front bumper wasn’t flush with the fender, and the plastic wheel well cover had tears and scratches.

The Seller’s Excuse: Carlos blamed the damage on a previous tire blowout, repeatedly reassuring me the car had never been in an accident and was mechanically sound.

The Test Drive & Purchase: The test drive felt mostly fine aside from a slight pull to the right, which we assumed just meant it needed an alignment. I paid cash in full and headed back toward my home. During the highway drive home, the steering wheel began vibrating, and the pull to the right worsened.
Uncovering the Truth
The morning after my purchase, I took the car for an oil change and an alignment at Brake and Tire Check. That is when the real problems came to light:

Severe Undercarriage Damage: The shop manager informed me the car had actually been in a major accident and repaired using junkyard parts. The entire right suspension (strut, control arm, CV axle, etc.) had been replaced with used components, and the front right tire had a dangerous bubble in it.

The Real History: I immediately purchased an official CARFAX report, which exposed an undisclosed accident matching these exact damage areas.

Professional Confirmation: A subsequent inspection by a Collision Shop confirmed the worst. The car was rigged with rusted, salvaged parts, the high-strength steel right front frame rail was physically bent (compromising the vehicle’s structural skeleton), and the engine cradle was warped.
The Seller’s Response
When I confronted Carlos, he only offered to replace the damaged tire and later offered to buy a lower control arm and front strut—a band-aid solution that completely ignored the dangerous, bent unibody frame and warped engine cradle.
When I formally requested a contract rescission and a full refund, Carlos refused and promptly deleted the Facebook Marketplace advertisement.
Since then, the mechanical nightmares have continued, including multiple flat tires caused by structural sidewall damage and rim air leaks stemming from the vehicle’s compromised condition.
